In early January crews from Sanitary District No. 1 delivered a yellow and green recyclable container to each of the 18,000 homes within the District.

Information about the enhanced recycling program was included with each container.  Residents are requested to immediately begin placing recyclable materials including paper, plastics and metal cans from their home waste into their recyclables only containers.  The District’s first recyclables collection day will be on Wednesday, January 21.  Following this date all residents will have recyclables collected on alternating Wednesdays.

“The distribution of the recyclables only containers was a monumental task and took months of planning and preparation.  The process was managed and executed successfully under the leadership of Superintendent Mistero and teams of hard working District employees,” said Commissioner Irving J. Kaminetsky.  “We encourage all residents to use their recyclables only container and actively participate in this state mandated enhanced recycling program.”

Residents with questions should call the District’s Recycling Hotline (516) 239-3606.  The District has also updated its website (sanitarydistrict1.com) with helpful information about this program and what residents need to do to make it successful.  Residents can also e-mail the District at recycling@sanitarydistrict1.com to ask questions and to sign up for community recycling updates.

Materials that must be placed in the recyclables only container include metal cans, aluminum foil, pans, plastic materials including bottles and bags, cardboard, newspaper, white paper, regular mail, magazines and paper grocery bags.

Glass is not a part of this program at this time.  In addition, waste items such as aerosol cans, paint cans, motor oil plastic cans and Styrofoam items should not be placed in recyclables only containers.
